Home Ed Social – for children AND adults!
We started our Home Ed Social to share our space and skills with families who were looking to meet others who educate differently.
Through personal and professional experience, we realised there are a growing number of young people and their families/carers who have either chosen to educate at home or have found that the traditional school system is just not working for them, and are now trying to find their way through the process to access something more suitable.
What we weren’t expecting was the sheer volume of families experiencing this.
Our first 12 months hosting this weekly social has flown by. What started off with a couple of families and children every fortnight, has grown to a weekly drop in where the HUB in Consett is taken over by our families.
Week after week, we get to facilitate and witness the social skills and confidence that these children develop. But it’s not just them. Their parents and carers have also found “their space” to be themselves and have a moment in the week where they can connect with other like-minded people.
The most surprising outcomes have started to happen. From the 15 year olds asking to volunteer in our cafe, and serve our customers, use the tills and make glorious coffees, to the 7 and 8 years, talking and sharing activities because they feel safe to do so, we stand by our belief that all kids and their families should have access to services and activities that facilitate learning, encourage curiosity and foster true human connections in safe and enjoyable environments for them.
